RRSP...Our History
On May 17,1979, a group of RISD retired teachers met in the library at Berkner High School to discuss the feasibility of organizing a retired teachers’ group. Further discussion and planning took place at Ray and Kay Felty’s lake house (The Golden Nugget) on Cedar Creek Lake on June 22, 1979. Finally, on Sept. 21, 1979, an organizational meeting was held at Wyatt’s Cafeteria, Richardson Heights Shopping Center, Central at Belt Line, where the vote was unanimous to organize the Richardson Retired Teachers Association. This action was under the sponsorship of the Richardson Education Association, and the RRTA became an affiliate of the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA).
Officers elected included Ray Felty, President; Nadyne Hill, Vice President; Mary Jo Foster, Secretary; and Josephine Langston, Treasurer. President Felty named a committee to write a constitution: Josephine Langston-Chairman, Julia Darnall, and Elizabeth Mann. A constitution was adopted by the membership on Dec. 14, 1979.
The 1979-80 inaugural year saw 52 charter members become the nucleus of the fledgling organization. We had registered 637 members as of July, 2019. On February 18, 2010, our members voted to change our name from the Richardson Retired Teachers Association to the Richardson Retired School Personnel in order to be more inclusive of all retired RISD employees.
We look forward to another year of fellowship, community service, and mutual concern for legislative matters regarding our retirement benefits.
